Before I read your poetry analysis of “Utopia”, I read the poem to make sure I had a rough idea of what the poem was about. However, after reading your essay, I feel like I completely comprehend the poem. First of all, your analysis of the parallelism and symbolism in “Utopia” and how this conveyed Szymborska’s message was very thorough and well done. You had multiple quotations and lines from the poem to back your points, and your careful interpretation of each quotations (for example, the island) was masterful. You not only used these two literary techniques to support your claim, but also related them to each other, which I find impressive.
Not only was your analysis of the poem well done, the way you related it back to Aldous Huxley’s writing and novels was also comprehensive. Some of the other poetry essays I read lacked the clear relationship between the poem and Huxley’s writing style. The way you compared the supposedly utopian society of each piece of literature was remarkable, as was the use of Szymborska’s quotations. If you incorporated a little more of Huxley’s plot in the comparison, this essay would be even better. But overall, a fantastic job.
